Why PCR Can’t Provide the Whole Story for UTI Assessment
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a remarkable tool for the assessment of target-specific genetic material, but it is Renascent Labs’ position that it simply is an inferior tool for the diagnosis and assessment of UTI. This is namely because, while PCR is good at identifying target-specific species in a urine specimen, it is deficient in how comprehensive its target list is and lacks accuracy with regards to quantifying viable bacteria, i.e. individual cells that would form a colony on agar plates (CFU). This is because PCR is agnostic as to the source of genetic target and amplifies nucleic acid from injured or dead bacterial cells present in the urine specimen. Internal Renascent data suggests that upwards of 90% of bacteria may be dead in a urine specimen submitted for culture. Renascent Labs uSTAT assay on the other hand quantifies live bacteria and distinguishes these live bacteria from injured and dead cells and couples this analysis to a robust MALDI-ToF database for species ID. Additionally, the comprehensive nature of Renascent Labs micSTAT phenotypic AST utilizes the clinical standard approach to antibiotic susceptibility testing and isn’t limited by target-specific resistance genes.
